Six Tips For Purchasing A Used Car

Purchasing a used vehicle can have many advantages, such as lower monthly payments, a shorter loan term, and for those just starting out, it can increase their ability to build a good credit rating. However, there are certain things a prospective buyer needs to keep in mind before signing on the dotted line.

Here at Joey’s Used Cars, we understand the apprehension that can come with making such an investment. To help bring you a little peace of mind, we have compiled a list of things to consider when car shopping.

Be Certain The Vehicle Meets State Inspection Requirements.

There are certain requirements that need to be met by different states. For instance, Maryland requires that any used car passes a full inspection, which includes but is not limited to brakes, fuel lines, wheel alignments, and working lights. These are just a few of the things that must be in top working order before it can be allowed on the road.

If you need your car inspected, Joey’s Automotive of Chestertown is a  licensed Maryland Vehicle Inspection Station. We have professional mechanics on duty to ensure that your car meets Maryland’s Inspection laws. and if it doesn’t we can bring your vehicle up to and beyond the standards set by Maryland’s guidelines.

Check The Vehicle’s Accident History

Many people think a simple accident can be repaired by a quick paint touch up, popping out a ding, or putting on a new fender. However, the truth is a car accident can do more than just damage the appearance of a vehicle.

For example, improper wheel alignment can lead to uneven tire tread. The transmission could become cracked and cause a leak. Suspension and many other important components can be damaged as well.

To see if your prospective car has been in an accident, write down the VIN number and search its history. There are a number of websites that will offer this service free.

Check For Maintenance Records

Just as our bodies need annual check-ups, so do vehicles. From simple oil changes to new brakes, the more records available regarding the car’s upkeep, the greater your knowledge of how well the car will perform in years to come.

Bring Along a Trusted Friend or Even Your Mechanic

When looking for a used car, it is easy to get caught up in the wrong details. Yes, having that beautiful paint job, electric seats and cd player may seem awesome, but if the engine is not in good shape, you’re basically looking at a beautiful shell.

Having a trusted friend who has a bit more experience come along to assess the state of the engine can help keep you from buying a car that may look good on the outside but is basically a wreck where it counts.

Buying a Vehicle From an Owner

Purchasing a used vehicle from an owner instead of a shop can be a bit easier on the cost at times, but you need to keep a few things in mind before you make that leap.

  1. Did they have it Maryland Inspected? If not, will they?
  2. Be certain they have a clear title. If you’re unsure, check it with the MVA.
  3. Ask if they’ll allow you to take it to your mechanic for a check.  (You will have to pay for it of course, but a good mechanic can spot things you may not have noticed.)
  4. Be sure to have a written contract of some kind, in case you need to leave the car while you get tags for it.

Buying a Used Car From a Dealer

There are many used car dealerships that can easily be found either on the web or by driving through your local township. One of the first things you may want to consider is asking your friends if they have bought a car from that particular dealer. Or if they have heard good remarks from other people who have purchased from that dealership.

Always ensure that they offer a warranty of at least 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first, before you purchase a vehicle. A dealership may or may not have maintenance records, so having a warranty at least gives you the time to find any major flaws.
